How to Check a Floor Coating Contractor in Tennessee

There is no download to unlock here and no email to hand over. Everything below is a fact you can check with a third party, which is the only kind of check worth running on a contractor. Read it, use it on three companies, and hold whichever one you hire to the same standard.

Eight checks before you sign

1. 01 Verify the licence against the job size, not the company Tennessee sets the requirement by project value, not by trade. A project between $3,000 and $25,000 requires a Home Improvement Licence in the counties where that programme applies. At $25,000 and above, a full contractor licence is required statewide. Ask which one the contractor holds and for the licence number, then check it yourself rather than taking a logo on a website for it.
2. 02 Check the number on the state portal before you sign anything The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance runs a public contractor verification portal. It returns licence status, type, and expiry. A licence that is expired, suspended, or in a different name from the company on the quote is the single cheapest red flag to catch, and it takes about a minute.
3. 03 Ask for the certificate of insurance directly from the insurer A certificate of insurance forwarded by the contractor proves less than one sent by the agency. Ask for the agent's contact and request it from them, and check that the policy is current on the date your work is scheduled rather than the date you asked.
4. 04 Get the surface preparation written into the quote Preparation is where floor coatings fail, and it is the easiest line to leave vague. A quote should name the method — diamond grinding to an ICRI concrete surface profile, typically CSP 2 to 3 for a coating of this kind — rather than saying “prep” or “clean and etch”. Acid etching does not produce a reliable profile on a power-trowelled slab.
5. 05 Ask what happens if the slab tests wet Moisture drives coating failure more than any other single factor, and a slab on grade in Northeast Tennessee can carry a lot of it. Ask whether moisture testing is included, which standard is used — ASTM F1869 calcium chloride or ASTM F2170 in-situ relative humidity — and what happens to the price if the reading comes back high. A contractor with no answer has not thought about it.
6. 06 Get the system named, with its solids content and film thickness “Epoxy” covers a $1,800 job and an $8,000 one. The quote should name the product line, the solids content, the number of coats, and the finished film thickness in mils. A 100% solids build and a thinned water-borne kit are different products, and only one of them is a fair comparison with a polyaspartic quote.
7. 07 Compare quotes on the same scope, not the same bottom line Three quotes are only comparable if they describe the same work. Before comparing prices, line up the prep method, the coating system, the film thickness, and whether crack and joint repair is included or excluded. The cheapest number on the page is frequently the one that excluded the most.
8. 08 Be careful with deposits and payment timing A deposit is normal. A large up-front payment before any material is on site is not. Agree what triggers each payment — mobilisation, grinding complete, coating down, final walkthrough — and keep a meaningful amount tied to the final inspection.
